| Description * | My name is Katie A Scarlett Howard. I was educated in Wrexham Yale College of Art, John Moores University, Liverpool School of Art, Cyprus College of Art, UWIC College of Art, Cardiff, and again in Cyprus College of Art in 2006. Over the years I have gained invaluable experience working with various age groups and abilities in clay work and sculpture. My work is based solely on the voluptuous shape of the female form, a reaction to tastes and ideals, I wanted my figures to question stereotypes of what society perceives as the beautiful body. I hope the figures portray an essence of strength, serenity, power and the celebration of being a woman. This particular exhibition (inspired by the life and times as a woman in prison) is based loosely on the story of the female prisoners and munitions workers who inhabited the gaol in past years. As you can see from the figures I have added a velvet under glaze to give the garments a matt colouring, they will be finished off with oxide staining (to give skin colouring) and translucent glaze (on small details) to enhance certain areas of each individual figure. The tactile experience of working with clay continues to fascinate me, I use a combination of techniques such as pinch, modelling and slab construction. The proportions of the figures tend to be large, but counteracting them with smaller details, such as the hands and feet. I want each character to have their own identity and vitality, so therefore I do not cast work or use any moulds.
