The Council Tax was introduced on 1st April 1993. It is the way in which local authorities raise funds to pay for their services. A bill is sent to the owner or resident of each dwelling in the area of every local authority.

The amount of the bill reflects the value of the dwelling, had it been sold on the open market by a willing vendor on 1 April 2003.

People with more expensive homes pay more council tax. The amount of the bill also depends on a number of other things.

In particular, there are separate systems of assistance with paying the council tax:-

-There are reductions for dwellings where a disabled person is resident
-There are reductions for exempt dwellings
-There is a council tax benefit for people who are on low income or have another adult resident with them who is on a low income.
