Rhyl Going Forward is the current programme of regeneration taking place in Rhyl, co-ordinated by Denbighshire County Council. The programme started in 2004 when a Strategic Framework was drawn up to carefully identify need and plan Rhyl’s regeneration over the forthcoming years. This was then submitted to the Welsh Government and accepted as the official document governing Rhyl’s regeneration. There are 3 members of staff dedicated to Rhyl Going forward but we work closely with multiple partners. These partners range from DCC departments, charities, the Welsh Government and other organisations to coordinate, fund and deliver the programme.
So far a great deal has been achieved, the award-winning drift park on the promenade was constructed under phase I of the Rhyl Going Forward programme, along with the acquisition of 3 derelict Houses of Multiple Occupation on Edward Henry Street, which were then refurbished in their original style and converted into a business centre, the building was painted by the artist L. S. Lowry in the 1930s. This building is now fully occupied by independent companies as well as Denbighshire County Council Staff.
A great deal of improvements have been made at the Foryd Harbour under phase I of the programme but there is still a long way to go and there are considerable plans for the harbour and its surroundings over the next three years. Please see our page on the Foryd Harbour for more information. A fantastic boost to the programme in 2009 was the result of a £9,000,000 bid to the European Regional Development Fund which was approved. Much of this funding will go into the Foryd Harbour as well as the new Walking and cycling bridge which will complement the Harbour Developments. In addition to this, Rhyl is, along with Colwyn Bay, one of the priority towns in North Wales to receive Welsh Government’s North Wales Coast Regeneration area funding for capital projects, therefore many of the projects which are currently being developed have received funding from this source and would not have gone ahead without this assistance. With both of these funding injections the future of our town looks very bright indeed.
The vision for Rhyl laid out in the original strategy document was:
”Rhyl will, by 2015 seek to become an enjoyable place to live and work – a town supporting a balanced, permanent, stable
and self-assured community within a prosperous and sustainable local economy.”
This is the vision we are constantly working towards in all of the projects we undertake.
