Occupational Health and Health & Safety
Within Central Personnel there is also a Health and Safety Unit and an Occupational Health Services Unit. Health & Safety and Occupational Health provide the following services:-

- Improve awareness and access to Occupational Health Services, both for Managers and Individuals.
- Reducing illness caused by working and overcoming work difficulties caused by illness.
- Provide advice and guidance on Occupational Health matters and promoting best practice
Evolve and develop relevant and co-ordinated Occupational Health policies. - Deliver a range of medical services including screening of various council employee groups, e.g. pre-employment, drivers and school crossing patrol personnel.
- Provision of confidential counselling service and psychological support for individuals.
- Provide a referral service to the Consultant Occupational Physician.
- Identifying training needs and facilitating meeting this need.
- Developing and administering monitoring procedures.

- Ensuring the Authority has a comprehensive and effective Health & Safety framework strategy.
- Advising the County Council’s Management Team and Directorates on Health & Safety compliance and legislation and promoting best practice.
- Evolving and developing relevant and co-ordinated Health & Safety policies.
- Monitoring and investigating incidents, trends and practices with a view to taking appropriate action.
- Advising on the assessment of risk and the implementation of safe systems, procedures, equipment, etc.
- Identifying Health & Safety training needs and facilitating meeting this need.
- Undertaking environmental monitoring and advise accordingly.
- Provide a mechanism for sharing Health & Safety practice and experiences across the Council.
