Community Councils are the most local form of elected bodies. Denbighshire is made up of thirty seven communities, known as either Town or Community Councils. There is no difference between a Town and Community Council in law. In England they are referred to as Parish Councils, however under law they are called Community Councils within Wales.

The power that a Community Council posses is prescribed within the Local Government Act 1972 and varies from Community to Community.  The range of powers depend on how much precept it raises through the Council Tax System. This will determine their budgets and how much they can spend on their plans. 

Some larger Town Councils within the County are responsible for such things as street furniture [public bins, benches, bus shelters etc]

Each Community Council will be made up of a minimum of six councillors, larger communities have a larger number of Councillors. The numbers are prescribed by the County Council but have to be authorised by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales and National Assembly of Wales before an amendment can be made.

Elections to Town and Community Councils occur every four years. The next scheduled elections will take place in 2012.  Town / Community Councillors do not get paid for their work, it is all on a voluntary basis.
