Cadw, an executive agency within the National Assembly for Wales is required by law to compile lists of buildings of 'Special Architectural or Historic Interest'.  These lists are used by planning authorities such as Denbighshire County Council to help make decisions with the interests of the built heritage clearly identified.

Buildings are normally listed as:-

• Grade 1 - of exceptional interest
• Grade 2*- particularly important
• Grade 2 - of special interest
• ex Grade 3 - buildings are not listed but are of local interest
