Children and Young People
Are children welcome? Yes - very warmly. All libraries have a special section for children with books and activities for all ages.
At what age can you join? Any age! The earlier the better - babies can join on the day they are born. Sharing books from an early age gives a good start to every child.
How do I join? By completing a membership form at the library or on the internet, getting a parent/carer's signature, and producing 2 proofs of ID on your first visit.
Is it free? Yes - you can borrow books, search for information and use the computers for free. There is a small charge for borrowing DVDS, videos, and CDs.
What can I borrow and for how long? Up to 10 items at a time - for 3 weeks to start with.
What if I'm late? There are no fines if children are late returning th6ir items - but why not renew them before then?
Can I use the computers? You can use the computers for free. If you are under 11 you will need to be accompanied by an adult. Between 1 1 and 14 you will need permission from a parent/carer.
Is there help with homework? There are books and computers to help you with your homework.
Are there activities for children? During the summer holidays, why not join the national reading challenge? During Children's Book Week, children from local schools visit libraries to meet authors. There are also opportunities for young readers, writers and artists to get together.
What is Dechrau Da/Bookstart? A scheme to encourage parents to share books with babies and young children. As well as books for babies, all libraries also hold regular rhyme and story sessions. Health visitors present every child with a free bag of books and an invitation to join the library. Mothers are welcome to breastfeed their babies in the library, and nappy changing mats are available.
