Physical Disabilities

What kind of help is available?

Social Services may provide a range of support for people with a physical disability and their carers. The help available includes:

  • Equipment to Make life Easier - There is a range of equipment available to help you in your daily life. Occupational Therapists can give advice on what equipment is appropriate for you and how to obtain it. In some circumstances, you may be able to borrow equipment from Social Services.
  • Adaptations to your Home - We may be able to assist you with simple adaptations in your home. Larger work to meet complex needs can be planned and arranged with you and we can advise on sources of funding. A more detailed leaflet is available called 'Altering Your Home to Improve Your Life'. If your present housing is unsuitable, we may be able to support you in looking for somewhere more suitable to live.
  • A Short Term Rehabilitation Programme - If you have lost some independence or confidence following illness or accident we may be able to assist you in acheiving greater independence.  Denbighshire Rehabilitation Support Service could assess your needs and if appropriate plan a rehabilitation programme with you. This may entail specially trained carers working with you as part of your care package.
  • A Break or Time Away from Home - There is a variety of care that we may be able to offer you either at home or away from home, for example in a residential or nursing placement, so that you or your carer can have a break for a day or longer.
  • Social Work Support - We may also be able to provide social work support for you and your family and carers, for example, if you are trying to adjust to your disability, considering your options, making changes or having difficulties generally.
  • Blue Badge Scheme - This scheme provides a national arrangement of parking concessions for people with severe walking difficulties, people who are registered blind and people with very severe upper limb disabilities.

If you are in hospital, ask the ward staff to see a Social Worker.
