Visual Impairment

Loss of vision, whether partial or total, can create many problems for individuals and their families. Today, there is a wide range of services for visually impaired people and their carers.

What Kind of Help is Available?

Registration

The Social Services Department is required to keep a register of visually impaired people. Registration is voluntary, but doing so will generally make it easier to obtain any benefits or services you need before registration, you must be certified as blind or partially sighted by a consultant ophthalmologist who will notify us. You will then receive a visit from a Social Worker who will advise you on the range of services and benefits available.

Assessment

The Social Worker can assess your needs with you and build up a picture of the sort of help you need.

Financial Benefits & Entitlements

There is a range of financial benefits and concessions you may be entitled to.  The Social Worker can advise you about these, or put you in touch with someone else who can help.

Help with Practical Tasks, Communication & Getting Around Safely

In some circumstances we can put you in touch with a Rehabilitation Officer who can teach you how to improve or maintain your independence. For example, you may have difficulties managing in the kitchen, using the telephone, looking after yourself and getting around safely both in your own home and outdoors. There is a range of equipment available to help you in your daily life. We can give advice on what equipment is appropriate for you and how to obtain it.

Leisure Activities & Employment

Information is available on how you can continue with your leisure activities. We can put you in touch with other services that can advise you on finding or retaining employment.

Services for People with both Visual & Hearing Impairments

Difficulties with both sight and hearing are common, particularly in older age. Social workers can provide advice, information and practical help.

The Visual Impairment Rehabilitation Service will assess the needs of severely sight impaired and sight impaired adults.  This is a service for people aged over 18 years.

For more information telephone The Visual Impairment Advice line, Thursday 2.30pm - 4.30pm, on  01824 706664.
