The teams are made up of a range of professionals such as Social Workers, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Psychologist and Support Workers. They provide advice and support to people suffering from mental illness and their families.
In addition, Social Workers within the teams are responsible for carrying out duties which are required under the Mental Health Act 1983. For example, people who might have a mental illness will sometimes need to be assessed by both a Social Worker and a Doctor if they are having difficulty in coping. On some occasions, an admission into a specialist unit within Ysbyty Glan Clwyd might be required.
For the vast majority of people who suffer from a mental illness, the aim of the Social Work Service within the Community Mental Health Team is to support people within their own communities and enable them to be as independent as possible.
In addition to advice and support regarding various issues, the teams’ Social Workers can also arrange various other services to help people. For example, some people might benefit from attending a Day Centre. This can be particularly helpful to people who live on their own who might benefit from having more contact with other people. Staff at the Centres usually arrange various activities but taking part in these is not compulsory.
Sometimes, people who might have a mental illness or their families might need help or advice urgently outside office hours. In these circumstances, contact can be made with Denbighshire Social Services’ Emergency Duty Social Work Service. The telephone number is 0845 05 33 116.
