Supporting People

The Supporting People programme provides housing related support for vulnerable people in different types of accommodation covering all types of tenure.

Supporting People services provide housing related support to people with a diverse range of housing related support needs, including:

  • women fleeing domestic violence;
  • men fleeing domestic violence;
  • people with learning difficulties;
  • people suffering from alcohol dependency;
  • young single homeless people who require support;
  • young people leaving care;
  • people who are homeless or potentially homeless and in need of support;
  • vulnerable single parents who require support;
  • people with mental health problems;
  • people suffering from drug dependency;
  • people with physical disabilities who require support;
  • ex-offenders;
  • people with chronic illness including AIDS, AIDS-related conditions or who are HIV positive, and
  • older people.

Supporting people services are in place to enable adults and young people to gain the skills and confidence needed to live independently. These skills would be those needed to keep your own home.  Some examples of these skills are:

  • paying your own housing costs (rent, mortgage etc.);
  • keeping your home secure, such as controlling visitor access;
  • making sure your home is safe, including the safe condition of the building, the safe use of appliances, and making sure your home is clean;
  • practical living skills necessary to maintain a home, such as cooking, and knowledge of nutrition or domestic chores such as laundry, and
  • establishing a stable place within the community; for example, the use of community facilities or trying to solve problems you may have with neighbours.
