What is the child protection register?
This is a confidential list of the names of children who have been, or who are at risk of being neglected, physically, emotionally, or sexually abused. We keep the register and its purpose is to make sure that we protect the child’s safety and welfare. If a child’s name is placed on the child protection register, we will draw up a child protection plan before the meeting.
What is the child protection plan?
The child protection plan outlines what action needs to be taken to reduce the risk of harm to the child. We will hold a review meeting at least every 6 months to look again at whether the child still needs protection. If we agree that the risk to the child has been removed, we will take their name off the child protection register.
We always try to keep children with their families in their own homes. Sometimes this is not possible, but we rarely remove a child from their family. In some cases, the person allegedly abusing the child may be asked to move out so that the child can stay at home. If the child is thought to be at risk, the child and family may still need support. We have a responsibility to provide support to families in need. We can provide information, advice and practical support, or ask other agencies to help the family. Whatever the outcome of the investigation, we will let the parents and carers know immediately, and they will receive a letter confirming any decisions in the post.
