Nantclwyd y Dre
Nantclwyd y Dre, Castle Street, Ruthin, Denbighshire, LL15 1DP - Tel.No: 01824 709822 Walk back through seven ages of Wales' oldest timbered town house..............
Each of the ‘Seven Ages’ of Nantclwyd’s history is evoked by recreated and fully-furnished rooms. Visitors start in the 1942 hall, then the 1916 rector’s study and 1891 schoolroom, to the splendid panelled and Chinese-wallpapered Georgian bedroom suite. Next comes Stuart owner Eubule Thelwall’s 1690 ‘cabinet’ with its ‘Kidderminster stuff’ hangings and handsome plaster ceiling, followed by the vividly decorated Jacobean bedchamber with its hung bed, painted cloths and a ‘stool of ease’ in its closet. Finally the 15th century ‘business room’, its 1435 structure virtually unchanged, recalls a mediaeval resident whose pilgrimage to Rome was recorded in a document found concealed within the house itself.
Since opening its doors for the first time in Summer 2007, Nantclwyd y Dre has welcomed people of all ages and from across the globe. During a visit, children (and adults!) can observe a colony of Lesser Horseshoe bats in the attic rooms via ‘bat cam’, participate in a quiz and use interactive media screens to learn more about the house and its inhabitants.
