Sustrans were successful in their Big Lottery bid for £50m to create cycle/pedestrain links in 79 different locations in the UK. The Foryd Harbour bridge is one of those 79 locations and Sustrans has £450k earmarked for this important National Cycle Route no 5 link between Kinmel Bay in Conwy County Borough Council and Rhyl in Denbighshire County Council.
A feasibility study has been completed to determine where the best landings are for the bridge on both sides of the river clwyd estuary, its capability to open or not, likely maintenence issues and estimated costs to build and maintain. This was completed in early April 2008 and based on that study findings Sustrans, Denbighshire County Council and the Welsh Assembly Government (DE&T) are preparing a brief for potential bridge engineers to design an iconic bridge for this important gateway. Denbighshire CC Bridge Engineering section will lead on this work.
The actual design will then need to be costed so as to form the basis of funding applications.
To assist in the necessary investigative works Denbighshire has commissioned some investigative bore holes either side of the estuary and actually in the estuary to discover the geology of the area and suitable landing points.
All this is being done in consultation with Kinmel Bay & Towyn Town Council, Rhyl Town Council, Sustrans, WAG and the private developers, Modus Properties Ltd, working on Rhyl's old fairground site to which the bridge would probably land.
Above is a computer generated idea of what the bridge may look like.
