There are 18 public toilets, spread throughout Denbighshire; these include fully manned, semi automated, unmanned and seasonal toilets. In 2004 the Council reorganised the way that the service was to be managed. The Public Toilets Service was ‘adopted’ by the council’s Environmental Services Department, Building Cleaning Section.
Although the Council is not legally obliged to provide public toilets, it recognises that they are an important local amenity, especially in an area that attracts large numbers of tourists. The Council’s desire to improve the quality of this service provision has meant £260k of investment in the infrastructure since 2004. This investment, coupled with a review of cleaning regimes and investment in staff, has meant that the Public Toilets Service won several major national awards in 2006.
- Association of Public Service Excellence – Cleaning Team and over all Service Team of the Year Award.
- Loo of the Year – Best Toilet in Wales 2006.
Denbighshire County Council have plans to further develop this service with continuing refurbishments of existing blocks and planned new provisions in the near future, and is proud to be associated with a number of national campaigns that aim to raise the profile of public toilets. These include the ‘Keep it Clean’ campaign by the Wales Tourism Alliance, the British Toilet Association’s campaign for provision of away from home toilets and the Changing Places scheme that promotes the provision of changing facilities for adults with special needs. We currently have new developments planned at the Nova, Prestatyn and the provision of 2 Changing Places cubicles at the Events Arena and Llangollen public toilets.
