Radon

Radon

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas which has no taste, smell or colour and usually occurs at levels which pose negligible risk. It can, however, enter buildings from the ground and in enclosed spaces concentrations can build up. The National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) has advised that the National Action level is set at 200 units as the annual average concentration. Above this level it is recommended that measures be implemented to reduce radon levels to as low as reasonably practicable. Such measures are often quite simple and inexpensive to complete.

Several areas in Denbighshire have been identified as having the potential to exceed the Action level limit and increasingly we are being requested to comment on this matter on local land searches during property sales and by purchasers notified by their surveyor.

If required, householders can have the level of radon gas in their home measured. The test is available from the NRPB and is safe, simple to use and the results are treated confidentially. Should results prove that radon levels exceed the threshold, the Building Research Establishment (BRE)  should be contacted for free advice on options and systems available for radon protection.
