Age Equality
The Employment Equality (age) Regulations 2006 came into force on the 1st October 2006 to protect workers from age discrimination. In brief, the regulations make it unlawful to discriminate against employees, trainees or job seekers on the grounds of age and that an individual has the same rights in terms of recruitment, promotion and training. The regulations make it unlawful to discriminate either directly, indirectly, through harassment or victimisation; and include all workers and individuals taking part in or applying for employment related training.

In 2001, 60% of the people living in Denbighshire were aged between 16 and 64, 20% were aged under 15 and 20% were aged over 65. However more recent information shows that compared to the population of Wales as a whole the age profile of Denbighshire is older with 23% of the population being of or above retirement age compared with 20% nationally.
Denbighshire County Council offer a range of initiatives for older people:
- The 50+ initiative for leisure
- Free swimming for those aged under 16 and over 60
- The Night Rider Scheme
- Assisted bin collection for older people.
Data on age is collected for homeless people and people in sheltered housing and for those applying for housing benefit because individuals may have different requirements depending upon their age. Staff in our Housing Benefits service have undertaken joint training with the Pension Service in relation to delivering services to the elderly.
- We are currently working in partnership with other agencies where our key policies are to be ‘age proofed’ by the Older People’s Partnership.
- We are piloting a warden scheme in the private sector to support older people living in their own homes.
- We propose to develop a six bed high level support scheme for young people and assist those leaving care to obtain suitable accommodation.
