DATA PROTECTION ACT
BACKGROUND
The Data Protection Act 1998 came into force on the 1st March 2000. It sets out rules for processing personal information and applies to many paper records as well as those held on computer.

PURPOSE
The purpose of the Act is to protect the rights of individuals and to enable them to access information that might be held about them. The Act also places a responsibility on Denbighshire County Council to safeguard your information, to deal with this information in a certain way, and it also restricts the way in which your information can be shared within and outside the organisation.
PRINCIPLES
The Act requires anyone who processes information about individuals to follow 8 data protection principles, which say that information must be:
- Processed fairly and lawfully
- Processed for limited purposes
- Adequate, relevant and not excessive
- Accurate
- Not kept longer than is necessary
- Processed in line with the data subject's rights
- Secure
- Not transferred to countries outside the EU
THE INFORMATION COMMISSIONER
The Information Commissioner is responsible for enforcing the Act and for providing advice and assistance to organisations who process information on individuals and also to individuals whose information is being processed. For further information or advice visit the Commissioners website.
