Bridges
Bridge

The Highways & Infrastructure Department is responsible for the maintenance of Denbighshire’s road bridges and other highway structures.
This includes 134 Bridges, 164 Retaining walls, 399 Culverts and 137 footbridges.

Bridges over operational railway lines are owned and maintained by Network Rail. Bridges on and over the A55 and A494 are managed by Conwy County Borough Council on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government.

Regular inspections are carried out to identify any necessary maintenance or repairs.  Our planned bridge maintenance programme includes routine removal of vegetation through to major refurbishment, strengthening and reconstruction.

We are carrying out a programme of strength assessments, which will identify if our bridges conform to current standards and modern vehicle loading.  In the interest of safety it is occasionally necessary to implement weight restrictions whilst we arrange strengthening works.

Foryd Harbour Walking and Cycling Bridge

Plans to develop Rhyl’s Foryd Harbour, including a walking and cycling bridge connecting West Parade and Kinmel Bay can be viewed on our website.

This landmark foot and cycle bridge will create a new crossing over the Foryd Harbour and link into a network of new and existing walking and cycling routes in the heart of Rhyl’s regeneration area, opening up the area for everyday journeys by walkers, cyclists, people pushing buggies and using wheelchairs. The bridge has been designed to allow access for all, so approach gradients are minimal.

We welcome your views and comments on the proposals and invite you to complete our questionnaire which can be found here.

Retaining Walls

Retaining walls that support the Highway are generally the responsibility of the Council.  Retaining walls that support land above the Highway and boundary walls are generally the responsibility of the landowner.

New Structures

Any proposal for a new structure on or adjacent to the Highway (including retaining walls, culverts and bridges) must receive our prior approval.  In addition notification is required for any works which are located within 3.66 meters of an existing highway structure.

Abnormal Loads

The bridges group is responsible for management of abnormal loads and a minimum of 2 days notice must be given in advance of any abnormal load movement usually by fax.  Our number is 01824 706865.
