What is Sheltered Housing?
The purpose of Sheltered Housing is to provide facilities for retired or disabled people who would find the special facilities under the scheme helpful, but who are sufficiently active not to require the full time support facilities of a retired persons’ home.
Sheltered housing schemes are flats or bungalows for older people with a Warden and 24 hour emergency intercoms on hand.
Resident and Contact Wardens
All sheltered housing schemes have a Warden.
A Resident Warden - lives on the site.
A Contact Warden - does not live on the site but visits on a regular basis.
Role of the Warden
A Warden is employed by the Local Authority to care for their tenants by ensuring, as far as possible, their safety and well being. Their role is that of an advisor, counsellor and a friend. They are the person readily available when a tenant needs help and they can advise and help him/her about other services and support that is available.
In cases of illness or accident, the Warden’s function is to call in the particular service which may be needed and to notify a relative, friend or Social Worker of the tenants plight.
Our Wardens are committed to helping older people, however, because of the numbers of residents in each of our schemes they are unable to provide individual, personal or day to day care.
The Warden communicates on the intercom system (in most schemes) each week day to ensure all is well, they will also visit at least once a week, more often if they feel it necessary. They will not enter a dwelling except in illness or emergency without being invited.
24 hour cover by Conwy Careline is available on all schemes.
