Introduction
Ysgol Tir Morfa is a Special Education Needs (SEN) School which has about 150 pupils aged between 3 and 19 with profound and multiple learning difficulties. Previously based over two sites, the completion of Phase 1 - the new Key Stage 1 (infants) building - in Easter 2005 has consolidated the school on the one site at Ffordd Derwen, Rhyl. The completion of Phase 2 has seen the Key Stage 2 (junior) pupils move from the adjacent 1970’s building to a modern, purpose built facility. The older building is still in use for Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils.
Key Elements of the scheme
The phase 2 scheme includes the following key elements:
• 5 classrooms
• Multi-use hall
• School kitchen
• External play area
• Full sprinkler system in the Phase 2 building
• Retro-fitting a sprinkler system to the Phase 1 building
Benefits of the scheme
The completion of Phase 2 will:
• provide a purpose built educational facility for Key Stage 2 pupils which will aid teaching and learning and enable educational improvements.
• extend opportunities for pupils, for example the new hall and external play areas will allow for the children to engage in more physical activities
• Improve the catering facilities through the provision of a new kitchen
• Improve energy efficiency by providing a well insulated building with a modern heating system
Budget
The total cost of phase 2 was £2.1 million, with funding provided by Denbighshire County Council and the Welsh Assembly Government
Timescales
Feb 2007 – start on site
Jan 2008 – completion of building
Feb 2008 – building operational
