Introduction
Ysgol Clawdd Offa is a new additional primary school being built in Prestatyn. The school will eventually accommodate up to 420 full time pupils, plus Nursery, and has been designed to offer flexible accommodation for the emerging curriculum trends, notably Foundation Phase and the emphasis on skills in the Key Stage 2 new Curriculum Orders. The building also benefits from many up to date design and technology features which have been incorporated to ensure the long term environmental sustainability of the school.
Key Elements of the scheme
The new school building has been designed to meet the requirements of Education provision in the 21st century, and includes many innovative features including:
• Flexible internal learning spaces in the Foundation Phase (Key Stage 1) classroom areas.
• Cellular classrooms in KS2 – structured so that internal walls can be removed should future trends require without affecting the integrity of the building structure.
• Integrated Outdoor Classrooms for the Foundation Phase Curriculum with direct and secure access from internal learning areas.
• All learning areas have direct outdoor access
• Community Room including kitchen facilities for use by external groups and service providers.
• Small tutorial rooms and discrete consultation, meeting and staff work rooms
• Multi-use Hall and adjacent Activity Studio offering maximum flexibility of use for PE, Dance/Drama/Performing Arts Events, Dining, Assemblies, etc.
• Cycle racks and associated cycle wear storage with access to showers and changing rooms
• Rainwater harvesting, with system for filtration and reuse to flush toilets
• Solar heating panels to heat water.
• Underfloor heating throughout to maximise the flexibility of available wall space.
• Integrated ICT network provision
• Building Management System to regulate and report on energy and water consumption, ambient temperatures, etc.
• Integrated Fire Sprinkler System throughout the building, designed in from the outset
The project has also included building a new road to access the site and junction remodelling on the existing highway.
Benefits of the scheme
Completion of the project elements outlined above will deliver benefits to the local community that include:
• Additional places for English medium primary education in Prestatyn to serve recent and potential future housing development
• Easing pressure on accommodation in existing local schools
• Consequential relief of peak-time traffic pressures in Prestatyn – particularly at or near other primary school sites
• Leading-edge learning environment and facilities for primary pupils
• Modern and attractive education and leisure facilities available to community groups and service providers
• Improved school accessibility issues appropriate for modern travel to school patterns
• Installation of sprinkler system to refurbished and new build areas
