Detached & Outreach Work

What Is It?

Detached and Outreach Youth Work is a style of youth work which is delivered to young people outside the confines of a youth centre. Workers go to areas where young people choose to congregate, wherever this may be. A typical Detached/Outreach project involves the deployment of two youth workers who work on the street and engage young people. Detached and Outreach work places particular focus on meeting the needs of young people that may not be engaging with traditional youth services. Workers focus on building voluntary relationships, seeking as a team to work with young people at locations where they gather – streets, cafes, parks etc.

The roles of deteched/outreach projects can be defined as:

• Specifically targeted where young people choose to gather.
• Aiming to make contact with young people on their terms through careful negotiation.
• Teams aim to develop both respect and credibility with the young people they meet.
• Supporting young people to make positive decisions affecting their own lives.
• Observe confidentiality.
• Access young people to resources.
• Providing young people with opportunities to discuss issues affecting them and their community.
• Giving information and guidance.
• Challenging attitudes and behaviour.
