The crackdown on Denbighshire landlords that provide sub-standard accommodation for tenants is continuing, with another property in Rhyl closed down due to serious health and safety concerns.
Denbighshire County Council and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service are working in partnership to inspect rented accommodation in the town, and during a visit to a property on Aquarium Street this week, conditions were found to be extremely poor and the Fire and Rescue Service used their powers to close down the property. The Council has re-housed the tenants.
Councillor Pauline Dobb, Cabinet Lead Member for Health and Well-being, said: 'The Council works closely with the Fire and Rescue Service to ensure that rented properties across the county are habitable and do not pose a risk to the health and safety. Most landlords behave responsibly and ensure that housing conditions are adequate, yet there are still some individuals that continue to ignore the basics of health and safety and are allowing tenants to live in sometimes appalling conditions.
'The Council and its partners will continue in their efforts and will not hesitate to use powers to close down properties that simply should not be allowed to be rented out to tenants.'
Alyn Edwards, County Safety Manager for Denbighshire, said, “Flats like these with multiple occupants should be licensed or registered with the local authority. This property was not, and contravened a number of fire safety regulations, put in place to save lives in the event of a fire.
'I am deeply concerned that landlords are not complying with their duty of care towards their tenants, and so are putting their lives at risk.
'Landlords who fail to comply with the rules of the housing act and the fire safety conditions within it will face legal action by North Wales Fire and Rescue Service in conjunction with the local enforcement authority.
'For more details, landlords should contact their local housing enforcement officer to ensure their properties comply fully with the regulations within the act.'
