Major Projects Group

Within the Transport and Infrastructure Service Department of Denbighshire County Council, the Major Projects Group (MPG) is a specialist Highway Engineering Service Provider to the North Wales Trunk Road Agency (NWTRA.

Responsibility for Trunk Roads sits with the Welsh Assembly Government as the Highway Authority. The Assembly employs NWTRA to act as Agent to the Assembly for Network management and certain scheme delivery. Major Projects Group as one of the Service Providers of the North Wales Partnership designs, procures and supervises Trunk Road Schemes for the North Wales Trunk Road Agency.

Alongside the specialist Services undertaken for the North Wales Trunk Roads Agency, the Major Projects Group provides in-house Engineering Services to ensure the successful implementation of Denbighshire County Council’s County Highways Capital Programme and the Group plays a key role in the successful delivery of major repairs and improvements to the County Highways Network.

As a Section of the Transport and Infrastructure Department, the Major Projects Group also undertakes work both for other Service Departments within Denbighshire County Council and externally to some strategic Clients.  This work consists of feasibility studies, outline and detailed design and preparation of Contract Documents for County Highways schemes, Transport Grant Schemes and WDA Environmental Improvement schemes.

The Major Projects Group also undertakes infrastructure design works for Denbighshire development and economic regeneration consisting of industrial estate and school access roads, car parks and other Public spaces.

Recent successes for the County in which the Group have delivered include:

• The visibility Improvement works to the Junction of Cholomendy Industrial Estate and the unclassified road to Trefnant (Craig Road).
• Trefnant crossroads
• Highway and traffic signal improvements in Rhyl
• Multi use games areas in Meliden, Prestatyn and Llangollen
• Many cycle/Pedestrian facilities throughout the County.

The above photographs show the ‘before’ and ‘after’ images of the improvement works recently carried out at Trefnant Crossroads. As part of the scheme the footway shown, outside the Trefnant public house was widened. Other improvements included up grading drainage, instillation of new traffic signals and carriageway resurfacing.
