10/16/2007 - Time to get fit in Llangollen

A new sports facility at Ysgol Bryn Collen and Ysgol Gwernant hosts its official opening ceremony this week.

Pupils from both schools have already started using the facility and local youth and community groups have been invited to make use of the amenities.

Planning for this facility started in 2006 when the Headteachers of both schools met Denbighshire Leisure Services to discuss the creation of a Fitness Suite which children could use during school time and outside school hours.

A joint application for funding was made to the Sports Council for Wales, specifically to the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘Active Lifestyles Fund’ for assistance in implementing the £45,000 project.   £30,000 was allocated to the project in March with other funding coming from various sources including leisure services and a Community grant.  The money has provided a range of fitness equipment suitable for seven to fourteen year-olds.  The equipment includes exercise bikes, rowing machines, a treadmill and some free weights.  SHOKK, the company supplying the equipment, has also provided training for 20 staff from both Education and Leisure Services.

Councillor Sue Roberts, Cabinet Lead Member for Lifelong Learning said “We are thrilled that months of planning have led to the creation of a very worthwhile facility for Llangollen’s youth. The project has been a very successful collaboration between our schools, Denbighshire’s Leisure Services and the Welsh Assembly Government’s Active Lifestyle scheme.

“We seek to develop pupils’ fitness and positive approaches to healthy eating, aims which are also shared by Denbighshire’s Leisure Services and the Community Focused Schools initiative.”

Assembly Minister for Sports, Rhodri Glyn Thomas said:'In order to enjoy better health, as a nation we must increase our daily levels of physically activity. This innovative programme is being used to fund improvements to community facilities, making it easier for local communities to become active, for example in community centres, village halls, or parks and other outdoor green spaces.”

The opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday 17th October at 2 p.m.

The Active Lifestyles Fund is a Welsh Assembly Government initiative, conceived to help create new or improved physical activity opportunities through which mass participation can be achieved.
