10/17/2007 - Education top of Denbighshire's priorities

Councillors in Denbighshire have amended one of the Council's corporate priorities, to better reflect the need to improve standards of education in the county.

The priority agreed in 2004 was for improving education buildings and was approved following the development of the Community Plan.  Now councillors have agreed to amend the priority to read “School and Educational Improvement”.

The Cambridge Education report - Modernising Education - and the recent Estyn report have demonstrated the need to place greater emphasis on education as a whole and for the County Council to recognise the importance of improving education standards as a corporate priority.

Ian Miller, Denbighshire's Chief Executive, said: 'Work is on-going to develop and implement actions to focus the Council on raising standards and improving educational attainment.

'One simple but clear statement of the Council's wholehearted support for this outcome, and its intent to place raising standards at the top of its agenda, is to amend the priority for education. The new wording continues to encompass the improvement of school buildings: the council has made much progress since 2004 although there are still significant challenges to face in making all school buildings fit for the 21st century.'

At a meeting at County Hall, Ruthin today (Wednesday), councillors were informed that improving roads and public realm would continue to remain as the Council’s other priorities.
