10/23/2007 - Warm Welsh welcome for African teacher

A teacher from Uganda has flown thousands of miles to Denbighshire to learn about the Welsh education way of life.

John  Mukuya arrived in Denbighshire on Saturday, October 20th and will spend a week with staff and pupils at Ysgol Emmanuel, Rhyl.

During his week, the Ugandan teacher will spend time teaching in the classroom and will learn more about how children are taught and will look at the kind of resources and activities arranged to deliver the national curriculum.  Also during the week, he will be given a tour of the region and will spend time with staff outside of the school surroundings.

The visit is arranged as part of an exchange visit, funded by the British Council.  A member of staff from Ysgol Emmanuel will travel to Uganda in the coming weeks as part of the exchange.

Darren Martin, Headteacher of Ysgol Emmanuel, said: 'There will be a warm Welsh welcome for John at the school.  I'm sure he will learn a great deal from the way we teach children and the activities arranged.  Of course, it is a learning process for all of us and we look forward to sending a representative from the school to Uganda, to learn best practice from  the Ugandan education system.'
