11/05/2007 - Wartime letter memories on display

Letters from local First World War soldiers are featured in an exhibition at the Denbighshire Record Office at Ruthin Gaol until the end of November.

The bilingual display, entitled ‘ Writing home…nos dawch i gyd’ includes letters and cards home from soldiers in training camps in Britain and on active service in the trenches.

Soldiers from Ruthin, Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd, Derwen and Rhuddlan are included.

Some of the most remarkable letters are correspondence from Private William Jones of Banciau, Derwen near Corwen to his parents and from Private Harry Jones of Ruthin to his wife, Elizabeth.

Harry Jones,  in his letters,  talks about singing Christmas carols to the Germans in their trenches. Both soldiers were to die later in France.

The exhibition is free and open during the Record Office’s normal opening hours
