Cyber-bullying, schools and the community is the theme to this year’s national anti-bullying week also known as respecting others week which gets underway on November 19.
Activities will be arranged in Denbighshire to focus on the issue.
This event is held in November every year and it provides a week to focus efforts on making our schools and communities bully-free zones.
This year’s theme targets the most recent form of bullying; the internet. Sites like MSN, Facebook and MySpace are often used as ways of picking on individuals. The theme also focuses on getting people within the community involved in protecting people who are vulnerable from bullies, asking parents and teachers to help young people fight bullying.
Denbighshire has put together a CD for all the county’s schools. The CD includes advice on how to cope with Cyber Bullying, 'acceptable use' of the internet and also a printable handout of computer related terminology for students, parents and teachers.
On November 21, an Information Sharing Drop-In Session will be held at Middle Lane, Denbigh. Representatives from organisations such as Child Line, DCC Youth Service, Police Liaison Officer, DCC Educational Psychology Service, Barnardos and many others will be on hand to give advice on Anti-Bullying. All schools in Denbighshire have been invited to attend this event.
Michael Duke, Principle Educational Psychologist will be holding briefing sessions for staff in various schools across the county throughout anti-bullying week.
Denbighshire is also taking part in a Welsh Assembly Government Conference in Llandudno on Friday 23 November. This year’s theme is ‘Schools in the Community’ and will provide the impetus to explore cyber bullying, safer routes to and from school, engaging parents and carers in school life, and racist and homophobic bullying.
Sylvia Jones, Denbighshire’s Head of Partnership and Inclusion, and Pat Ellis, Deputy Headteacher in Prestatyn High School, are facilitating a workshop on "collaborative working to address bullying" at the conference in Llandudno.
