The number of people registering to vote in Denbighshire has increased again for the second year in succession.
The increase comes as the County's electoral registration team complete an extensive door-to-door canvassing campaign following up those who have not returned election registration forms.
The new register will be published in early December and will be used for the Local Government Elections to the County Council and all Town and Community Councils on Thursday 1 May 2008.
Those who have not yet responded are reminded that they still have a few days to make sure their details are correct.
There are now over 74,100 people registered to vote in the County compared with 73,500 last year. The increases are the result of an efficient policy of encouraging more residents to return electoral registration forms rather than significant population growth.
Denbighshire also has an automated system allowing those with no changes in their details to confirm their details over the telephone or on-line. Over 13,000 households have used this free service, equating to over 31% of all registrations, this is an increase of 9% in those using the automated service.
Ian Miller, Chief Executive and Electoral Registration Officer for Denbighshire said: ”It is excellent to see an increase in those registering to vote. It is vital that the register covers the full range of different sections of our community, not only to underpin democracy but also for justice, as the register is used to select people for jury service. People who don't register to vote may also find it more difficult to obtain credit as checking agencies regularly use the electoral register to confirm the address of applicants for loans.'
'The door-to-door follow up calls have had a good response and the automated system has yet again proved popular with the electorate. The system is free to use, saves the council money and helps us to continue to ensure the very best value for money for the services we provide.”
