05/13/2008 - Denbighshire County Council - Leadership Candidates

Denbighshire County Council has confirmed that the following nominations have been received for the role of Leader of the Council:

Councillor Hugh Evans  (Independent, Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd/Gwyddelwern)
Councillor Evans has been nominated by Councillor Raymond Bartley (Independent, Denbigh Lower) and Councillor Gwilym Evans (Independent, Llandyrnog)

Councillor Julian Thompson-Hill  (Conservative, Prestatyn East)
Councillor Thompson-Hill has been nominated by Councillor Pauline Dobb (Conservative, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd/Llangynhafal) and Councillor Ian Gunning(Conservative, Rhyl South East)

Councillor Evans was Leader of the Council and Lead Member for Education from October 2007 until this month's elections, having previously been Vice Chair of the Lifelong Learning Scrutiny Committee and Chair of the Independent Group.  He was first elected as a county councillor in 2004.

Councillor Thompson-Hill was also first elected as a county councillors in 2004 and served as a member of Denbighshire's Cabinet from 2004 until the elections.  He was Lead Member for Finance from October 2007 having previously been Lead Member for Asset Management.

The Leader will be elected at the Council's meeting in Ruthin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, 20 May.  The Council's constitution provides for the voting to be by secret ballot.

The Leader then appoints other members of the Cabinet and decides their portfolios.
