On 16th June Denbighshire and Conwy County Councils, North Wales Police, Age Concern and Conwy & Denbighshire NHS Trust are holding an event to raise awareness for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
The event will be held in the foyer of Ysbty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan, and will include information on who is a vulnerable adult and what constitutes abuse.
A vulnerable adult is someone who is over the age of eighteen, but who, because of disability, age, or illness, is unable to protect themselves from harm or from being exploited. Abuse can include, physical, sexual, emotional/psychological, financial or neglect by paid or unpaid carers.
In 2007-2008, Denbighshire dealt with 206 referrals regarding possible abuse - an increase of over 50% on the previous year.
Councillor Pauline Dobb (Conservative) Lead member for health, social care and well-being, said: “We in Denbighshire consider the protection of vulnerable adults a high priority and we have greatly strengthened our services to ensure vulnerable people are protected.
“We would encourage anyone who has concerns of possible abuse to a vulnerable adult to contact Denbighshire County Council on 01824 712900 or, if a crime is suspected, you can contact the Police directly.”
