To help Denbighshire County Council promote Adult Learners week (May 17 – 24), NIACE (National Institute for Adult Continuing Education) provided funding to purchase a Nintendo Wii.
This year, Adult Learners Week was led by Denbighshire’s Older People’s Strategy, who coordinated a week of fun, informative and interactive events in the county. As part of the campaign, the Wii console was launched on Wednesday, June 11, with a demonstration at Dolwen Residential Home and Day Centre in Denbigh, where youngsters from Denbigh High School visited to show the older residents and visitors how to use the console.
Sandra Carroll, Older People’s Strategy Development Officer, came up with the idea to spend the money on a Wii console.
She said, ‘Using the console is a great way for older people to improve their coordination and, through Wii’s active gaming features, to promote the health and wellbeing of older people through gentle exercise. It’s also an excellent way to encourage older people to use and enjoy new technology. We had a really positive response from the older people today, and I’m sure they will all be playing like experts within a month!’
The Wii console will be on loan to the residents and day visitors of Dolwen until the end of August, and will then be available to borrow as a learning tool for adults and older people in Denbighshire.
