06/16/2008 - Council concerned at Revenues and Customs plans for Rhyl base

Denbighshire County Council has expressed concern at a proposal by HM Revenue and Customs to withdraw its service from Rhyl.

HM Revenue and Customs  is carrying out a review as part of a move to modernise its operations throughout the UK and has identified a need to reduce the number of staff in North Wales from around 180 to 80 by 2011. The proposal is to close the Rhyl base, which employs 50 and its base in Bangor and to retain their Colwyn Bay building.

Councillor David Thomas, Cabinet Lead Member for Regeneration said: "Yet again, this is an example of a proposed reduction in civil service jobs in the town. This proposal follows hot on the heels of the closure of the Department of Work and Pensions in the town. Civil service jobs play an important role in contributing to the economy of Rhyl, which continues to rank high in the index of multiple deprivation.

"The Council will be contacting HM Revenues and Customs to express in the possible strongest terms the objections to this proposal and I would urge local businesses and those interested in protecting the future of the base to take the opportunity to have their say.

“We have also written to MPs in Westminster who represent Denbighshire communities to express our dissatisfaction at the proposals.”

Responses should be sent to: Paul Smyth, Workforce Change Programme: Community Feedback, HM Revenues and Customs, Room 95, Somerset House,
Strand, London, WC2R 1LB.
The closing date for responses is July 27.
