06/24/2008 - Counties join forces for EU funds

(This is a joint press-release by Conwy County Borough Council, Denbighshire County Council, Gwynedd Council and the Isle of Anglesey County Council)

Conwy, Denbighshire, Gwynedd and the Isle of Anglesey Councils have signed a significant agreement on Friday (20 June 2008) to cooperate on key European funding programmes.

The Memorandum of Understanding will ensure that the four councils work together to ensure that North West Wales makes the most of new opportunities that will be offered by European Convergence and Interreg funding between 2008 and 2013.

Signed by the Leaders of each council and their Chief Executives, the aim of the memorandum is to ensure the effective delivery of collaborative projects for Convergence and Interreg funding in the area.

Guidance has been given by the Welsh European Funding Office that areas should cooperate to develop Convergence projects.

The Councils hope that by signing this agreement they will be able to meet the guidance and deliver the important projects that have already been identified.

Cllr. Dilwyn Roberts, the Leader of Conwy said: “this agreement is a statement to demonstrate our willingness to work together in a spirit of co-operation for the benefit of North West Wales”.

It is hoped that working together will strengthen the case for North West Wales to access funding.

“By working closer together we will be able to ensure that the voice of North West Wales is heard loud and clear”, said Cllr. Hugh Evans, Leader of Denbighshire Council.

The four counties believe that this memorandum is a significant step forward to developing important projects in the area, however all Councils urge the Welsh European Funding Office to speed up the process for approving projects.

According to Cllr. Dyfed Edwards, Gwynedd Council’s Leader: “We want to ensure that by cooperating we will see key projects being developed which will improve economic, social and environmental standards right across the four counties”.

Cllr. Phil Fowlie, the Isle of Anglesey’s Leader believed that the new agreement would add to the work that was already being done with the Môn-Menai programme.

“Anglesey and Gwynedd already have an agreement to work together through the Môn-Menai Programme, this work will continue, but we are also committed to cooperating across North West Wales to share vital information and work together on some key ideas and projects”.
