06/30/2008 - Get ready to meet the Superlambanana at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.

Once seen, never forgotten, the Superlambanana has certainly captured the imagination of people everywhere, with a small army of ceramic replicas found across the globe – and now a special one is heading to Denbighshire for the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod.

As part of the celebrations for Liverpool City of Culture 2008, a series of workshops will be run at Llangollen during Eisteddfod week where visitors will be able to help decorate our very own Superlambanana using images that relate to the county and the Clwydian Range AONB.

The workshops will be held on Thursday, July 10, 10.30am – 12.30pm, 1.30pm – 3.30pm and again on Saturday, July 12, 10am – 12pm and then 1pm – 2.30pm. 3.30pm – 5pm. All are welcome to attend.

Similar workshops are running in Flintshire and the project is set to culminate with the fully dressed Superlambanana being 'put to graze' at the top of Moel Famau on August 16 for a day of fun and celebration and will then remain in-situ for a further four weeks.

The Superlambanana was the original work of Japanese-based artist Taro Chiezo commissioned for an exhibition back in 1998. Since then, the iconic, if somewhat controversial art work has certainly had an impact. The sculpture has become synonymous with Liverpool (where a 17ft version now lives in the city centre) due to the port's rich history in the trade of lambs from Wales and the import of bananas.

Historically, North Wales has had strong links with Liverpool and throughout 2008, Denbighshire is promoting the rich cultural heritage we have.
