07/15/2008 - Changes to library opening hours at St Asaph, Rhuddlan and Rhyl

Denbighshire County Council has announced the reduction of opening hours at three of the county's libraries.

Proposals were made for reduction in opening hours as part of cost savings for the current financial year. However, this was delayed due to a one-off LABGI grant which gave the authority time to look into all options. A working group has now reported that a reduction in opening hours at three libraries is the preferred option and this has been formally agreed by members of Denbighshire's Cabinet.

The changes to the current services are:
· St Asaph Library will close on Thursday afternoons
· Rhuddlan Library will close on Monday evenings
· Rhyl Library will open three nights a week instead of the current four.

These changes will come into effect in October.

Councillor Morfudd Jones, Cabinet Lead Member with responsibility for libraries, said: "The Library Service, like all other departments,  was asked to identify efficiency savings and the proposal put forward has now been agreed.

"We believe that the effects of this decision will be minimal as we have used vacancies as a way of raising the savings needed. The knock-on effect is a minimal reduction in opening hours at three of the county's libraries. All other libraries across the county are unaffected."
