07/17/2008 - Council wishes the best to North Wales' newest university

The Chairman of Denbighshire County Council, Councillor Raymond Bartley has offered his congratulations and best wishes to Wales' newest university.

The North East Wales Institute at Wrexham will be officially named as a university tomorrow (Friday) after being granted university status by royal assent of the Queen and is to be named Glyndwr University after the conquering Welsh hero who led a rebellion in the 15th Century.

Councillor Bartley said: "We are delighted that NEWI has achieved university status and official recognition as a centre of excellence for higher education in the North East Wales region.  A number of students attending courses there come from Denbighshire.

"The Council is even more delighted at the name chosen, given the strong historic links Owain Glyndwr had with Corwen, Ruthin and Denbighshire as a whole.

"This is an important day in NEWI’s history and we are delighted to offer everyone at Glyndwr University every best wishes for the future".
