Top Composting Tips

Composting at home is easy. You can compost everything in the Yes column of the table below. We advise that items in the No column be avoided as they do not compost well or at all.

YES

  • Vegetable and fruit peelings
  • Tea leaves, coffee grounds and crushed egg shells
  • Weeds
  • Hair
  • Paper
  • Animal manure
  • Evergreen clippings
  • Leaves
  • Prunings
  • Vacuum dust
  • Straw and hay
  • Grass cuttings

NO

  • Body fluids, disposable nappies, used paper handkerchiefs (in case the pathogens which carry disease are not all destroyed by the composting process)
  • Excrement - human/cat dog (for the same reason)
  • Brightly coloured or shiny card or paper
  • Hard objects, stones, bits of glass, metal, plastic
  • Cleaning fluids and other household/garden chemicals
  • Meat (cooked and raw) the smell can attract animals

What to do with your finished compost

Don’t worry if your compost doesn’t look the same as garden centre compost. It may be lumpy, with twigs and bits of eggshell in it, but as long as it is brown in colour, has a spongy texture and smells earthy it is ready.
If your compost has large chunks of wood in it, it is ideal to use as mulch around trees and shrubs. This will keep the weeds down and feed the plants.
Compost can be used as potting mix for houseplants or to start new plants from seeds. About a third of the mix should be compost, the rest soil. This mix will allow plants to take root firmly.
A newly seeded lawn, or a mature lawn will benefit from a compost boost. Mixing the compost with sand will help it to spread evenly.
Compost is full of nutrients, and helps to improve soil structure, manage moisture levels and suppresses plant diseases. Dig compost into the soil around your plants, flowers or in your vegetable patch. This will help replace valuable nutrients in the soil.
