Pilot Bus Service – Corwen & Llyn Brenig

Cadwyn Clwyd, in partnership with Denbighshire County Council, has funded a pilot bus service in the south of the County aimed to give passengers access to the countryside without using the car.

The pilot bus service, which started on 1st May 2010, is operated by Rogers Coaches, and takes in the scenic route from Corwen to Llyn Brenig and Llyn Alwen through the picturesque villages of Betws Gwerfil Goch, Melin-y-Wig, Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr and Cerrigydrudion.
Buses for Llyn Brenig depart from Corwen Car Park at 10:00 and 15:45 everyday with an extra bus at 12:25 on a Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday.

Return journeys from Llyn Brenig, Alwen and Clocaenog Forest depart at 11:15 and 16:40 everyday with an extra bus leaving at 13:30 on a Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday.

Additionally, the bus service provides a vital link for residents living in the upper reaches of Corwen into the town centre.  Buses operate Monday to Saturday from Uwch-y-Dre, Penybryn and Bryn Llewelyn departing at 09:50, 12:15 (Saturdays only) and 15:35, with return journeys from Corwen Car Park at 12:10, 14:35 (Saturdays only) and 17:35, giving ample time for shopping or doctors visits and connections with main line bus services.

The aims of the pilot bus service are to provide increased access to the countryside for people who do not use cars or who wish to leave them at home, which in turn will minimise the environmental impact of increasing leisure travel and reduce congestion in tourist areas. The purpose is to encourage inclusive and sustainable access to rural communities and leisure destinations.

Conwy and Denbighshire County Council’s Joint Head of Highways & Infrastructure said “We have received several calls from residents in this part of Corwen for a bus service into the town centre and we are delighted to help out.  Some residents find it difficult to walk up and down the hill in the Uwch-y-Dre and Penybryn areas.  Now, they can take advantage of the new bus service and with hail-and-ride, the driver will stop wherever it is safe for him to do so. Passengers should give a clear indication that they wish the bus to stop.  We hope that people will be encouraged to leave their cars at home and enjoy the bus ride, as it meanders through the foothills of Llyn Brenig and Llyn Alwen.”

Eric Rogers of Rogers Coaches added “We are pleased to welcome passengers on the new route. The new service has a lot of potential as a tourist route, as well as providing a valuable service for local residents.”

A timetable of the new service may be viewed by following the links on this web page.

Any passenger may purchase the £3.60 special day ticket (adults) or £1.80 (children).  Holders of valid Welsh free travel passes can travel free of charge.

The new bus service is operated under contract to Denbighshire County Council by Rogers Coaches of Graigfechan, Ruthin.
