Denbighshire
Back to boxes?

Denbighshire’s residents are recycling more than anybody else in Wales, and we want it to stay that way!

The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) is consulting right now on whether councils should be made to change their recycling systems in favour of a system called 'kerbside sort'. This is the type of system we previously had in Denbighshire when we had our blue boxes.

WAG thinks kerbside sort systems are better because council workers manually sort through the materials at the roadside, and leave behind any items that shouldn’t be there - we believe our 'comingled' system is better because it is simple and convenient for our residents.  We ask householders put ALL of their recyclables into bags or wheelie bins. We then transport the materials to a factory where they are sorted mechanically.

A recent survey of residents found more than three times as many said they wanted to use the comingled system rather than kerbside sort.

We need you to tell WAG what you think - especially if you are one of the people who has started recycling more because of our new systems.

WAG funds nearly all of the council’s recycling activities, so we have to take this very seriously. As part of its consultation WAG states: “kerbside sort systems are just as popular with residents as comingled collections...”

We don’t believe this to be true so we need you to use the link below in order to TELL WAG WHAT YOU THINK!

  • Do you think that a simple comingled system like ours has encouraged YOU to recycle more?
  • Would you like your fortnightly blue wheelie bin to be replaced with a weekly box and sack system WAG’s preferred system?
  • Should councils be penalised financially if they stick with their comingled systems? This is what WAG is suggesting.
  • What level of priority should be given to residents’ views when councils decide on their collection systems?

Question 22 of the Welsh Assembly Government's consultation is the one that we would like you to respond to.

The question is: Should central government withhold funding from councils that refuse to provide the type of services that central government deems to be the best?

WAG is asking this question is because it wants Denbighshire to STOP using the current system and force us down this route.
