Road safety - cameras

Safety cameras are used to make roads safer and to therefore safe lives. They are not used as a method of raising of revenue; indeed cameras are very expensive to purchase and maintain, meaning it’s not unusual for cameras to operate at a loss.

Camera enforcement is carried out by the 'Go Safe' casualty reduction partnership. This partnership covers the whole of Wales and is made up of all three Welsh police forces, the twenty two Welsh local authorities plus other agencies. For more details please click on the ‘Go Safe’ link. The former partnership, which was known as ‘Arrive Alive’, covered the area of the North Wales police force only.

Speed cameras can only be used at locations where people have been killed or injured; at community concern sites; or at roadworks. Community concern sites are locations where local communities have complained that speeding vehicles are endangering lives, and speed survey evidence confirms that there is a problem.

Please note that Police officers not working directly for the Go Safe partnership may also undertake speed enforcement activities.
