Denbighshire
Road safety - cycling proficiency

With the help of grant funding from the Welsh Assembly Government, Denbighshire County Council has constructed significant lengths of cycle routes in recent years. These routes contain a mixture of on-carriageway and off-carriageway routes.

Many journeys currently made by car are less than two miles in length. We believe that many of these journeys could be made on foot, or by bicycle. The benefits of doing this are that it will improve people’s health and cut the amount of traffic on our roads. Reducing traffic levels will reduce congestion and air pollution, whilst making our towns and villages a nicer place to live.

To help encourage more people to cycle we provide cycle training known as ‘Bikeability’.

Bikeability is 'cycling proficiency' training for the 21st century for all ages.

Bikeability training can only be delivered by qualified instructors, and there are national standards to 3 levels of ability.

Level 1 is basic off road bike control skills to ensure the rider is prepared for on road training.

Level 2 training takes place on local roads with light traffic.  When the outcomes of level 2 training are achieved, parents and children may feel encouraged to ride more often, for instance to school.

Level 3 training aims for safe cycling skills for adults and older children on busier roads and more complex road layouts

The overall aim of cycle training in Denbighshire is to enable more people to cycle more often, more safely.

The Road Safety Unit runs a cycle training project which ensures that Bikeability training to levels 1 and 2 is available to all Primary Schools in the County for their Year 6 pupils.
A small amount of level 3 training is undertaken in some Secondary Schools.
