Road safety - speed humps

Road humps, or 'sleeping policemen' as they are sometimes affectionately known, are a form of traffic calming. The term 'road hump' actually covers a number of different types of feature such as raised junctions, speed cushions and round or flat-top road humps. The size and placing of the various types of road hump are covered by regulations.

Speed cushions are a type of road hump that are narrow enough for wide vehicles, such as buses and fire engines, to straddle.

We normally introduce road humps as part of a wider traffic safety scheme, such as a ‘Safer routes to school’ project, or in a location where there have been a number of speed related collisions.
