The Environment Minister, John Griffiths, made a flying visit to the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty recently. Last November, he confirmed the Designation Order to create this new AONB that now covers 388sq Kms and stretches from the Prestatyn Hillside to the Dee Valley.
The Minister had a whistle stop tour of a number of sites, including Corwen, and the site of the proposed railway terminus, where he met local Councillor Huw Jones. He also saw the Horseshoe Falls (part of the World Heritage Site) and the Panorama Drive above Llangollen, taking in the stunning scenery.
He then had a meeting with interested partners on existing and future opportunities for the AONB at the University of Central Lancashire’s (UCLAN) Outdoor Education Centre in Llangollen. The meeting was hosted by the Chair of the AONB Committee, Cllr Carolyn Thomas who talked about the benefits of being designated an AONB. 
An AONB designation is about helping to sustain communities and businesses, encouraging mental and physical well being through organised activities and providing educational resources for people who come to study in the area.   Local, skilled craftsmen are employed and the officers work with farmers to help them with environmental schemes and grant funding.  It’s wonderful that the designation means the area will be protected and enhanced for future generations to enjoy.”
This designation takes the area into the National Family of AONBs, which includes the Cotswolds and Wye Valley.
The Minister reiterated his commitment to the outstanding landscapes of Wales and said, 'My recent decision to approve the designation of this area as an AONB is proof of the Welsh Government’s commitment to managing the area as effectively and efficiently as possible to ensure the best and most sustainable outcomes for Wales.
 He was really impressed by the stunning scenery he saw on his visit, especially the Panorama, looking towards the Eglwyseg Rocks and Dinas Bran Castle.
