West Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme
Studies of the previously existing coastal defences along the Rhyl coastline found that structures required urgent upgrading in order to provide protection to Rhyl from coastal flooding. As a large proportion of the town is below high tide level, if these defences are breached, or waves overtop the structures, there is potential for significant flooding to occur in Rhyl, threatening many residential and commercial properties.
The West Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme aims to provide relief from coastal erosion and coastal flooding to give greater protection to residential and commercial properties inland of the promenade wall at Foryd Harbour and east along West Parade.
In line with national guidance, the scheme has been designed to provide protection from a 1 in 200 year flood event. The scheme has also been designed to take account of predicted sea level rise of the next 100 years.
Phases 1 and 2 of this project started early in 2011 and are currently in progress. Denbighshire County Council is working with the Welsh Government to agree the necessary works for the final phase 3 which is anticipated to commence in 2013.
