Pet shop / Animal Activities licences
If you are running a business which sells animals as pets you are required to have an Animal Activities Licence and you must comply with certain Conditions while undertaking these activities.
The following types of activities that fulfil one or more of the following criteria are now subject to licensing:
- the import, distribution and sale of animals by a business.
- businesses registered with Companies House.
- businesses or individuals operating from domestic premises for commercial purposes (you may still be classified as business for the purpose of these requirements even though you may not be listed on Companies House).
- premises open to members of the public, or to other businesses where animals are available for purchase.

You will be subject to an inspection to assess your compliant with Conditions which forms part of our deciding whether or not to approve a new licence.
How much does it cost?
A pet shop licence costs £150. It also costs £150 to renew your licence each year.
When you apply for your licence online you will pay the fee online, by debit or credit card.
