Education training - Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) training: Session 1

This training is delivered by Education Psychologists to Teaching Assistants/Learning Mentors within primary, secondary and specialist provisions to become Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs).

Following the training ELSAs are equipped to support children and young people’s emotional well-being in school (Reception to Year 13).

Preventative interventions implemented by ELSAs help schools support pupils’ emotional/social needs from within their own resources.  Some Denbighshire schools currently have ELSAs working successfully with students.

Who can attend?

You must be a Teaching Assistant or Learning Mentor within a Denbighshire primary, secondary or specialist provision to attend this training.

How to take part in the training

The cost for this training is £430 per person and you must attend all 6 sessions below to become an ELSA;

  • Session 1: Emotional literacy in schools/ Raising emotional awareness - 12/11/18 (Denbigh Town Hall)
  • Session 2: Self-esteem/ Active listening and communication skills - 13/11/18 (County Hall, Ruthin)
  • Session 3:  Anger management/ Working with puppets - 19/11/18 (County Hall, Ruthin)
  • Session 4:  Social skills, Autism Spectrum Disorders and Social Stories - 20/11/18 (Denbigh Town Hall)
  • Session 5: Friendship skills/ Writing therapeutic stories - 26/11/18 (County Hall, Ruthin)
  • Session 6: Attachment and Bereavement - 27/11/18 (County Hall, Ruthin)

ELSAs will be required to attend 4 supervision sessions per year following training (approximately 2 hours per half term) with an Educational Psychologist. 

How to pay

Payment for school staff will be processed internally once the course has started.

For non school staff payment will be via invoice.
