Council's Head of Housing up for industry award

A senior member from Denbighshire County Council is in the running for a prestigious housing industry award.

Jamie Groves, who is the Council’s Head of Facilities, Assets and Housing has been shortlisted for the Inspirational Leader of the Year 2018 at the Housing Heroes Awards.

This award recognises an individual capable of truly inspiring others through their leadership,  someone who leads by example and produces the best results by getting the best out of the people they work with.

The submission, put forward by his housing management team, read: “It is widely accepted that Jamie Groves is one of the most inspiring, forward thinking, innovative and customer driven Heads of Service that Denbighshire County Council has seen.  This year’s winner of the Leadership category in Denbighshire’s own Excellence Awards, Jamie has a transformational leadership style and a unique ability to inspire loyalty and trust from both his staff and elected Members.

“In 2015, Jamie took over the Housing portfolio, a Service which had to overcome serious internal challenges.  From the start, Jamie had a clear vision for Denbighshire Housing and understood the importance his staff would play in its achievement.  Under Jamie’s leadership, there has been a significant increase in staff morale.  A recent staff survey has shown more staff feel they have a clear vision and confidence in their senior management team (28% increase).  They finally feel they get recognition for their contribution.

“Any plans for Housing are always developed in a collaborative way with his management team.  Jamie sees potential for improvement and never accepts the status quo.  He strives for excellence in everything he does and his ‘can do’ approach is cascaded down, embraced by his management team and consistently flows to the staff tiers below.

“Encouraging staff to put the customer at the centre of everything we do, has brought about dramatic improvements.  Jamie has introduced transparent and open channels of communication with tenants, who are now able to engage with and challenge the Service.  This has led to increased customer satisfaction and has seen Denbighshire Housing’s reputation flourish.

“This radical turnaround is down to Jamie’s vision, hard work, commitment and drive.  He combines these elements into a style of leadership which really makes a difference both to his staff, and to Denbighshire Housing’s tenants, communities and stakeholders.

In the application, the Former Chief Executive of Denbighshire, Dr Mohammed Mehmet, who worked closely with Jamie, referred to him as “a high quality senior manager with the ability to lead transformational change and inspire staff.  He is one of those rare colleagues who is excellent at strategy and detail and always demonstrates strong values of integrity, empathy and high standards, which command the respect and admiration of all of us.”

Jamie said: “I’m delighted and honoured to have been nominated, as well as  reaching the shortlist. None of the achievements within the housing service would have been possible without the tremendously dedicated team of staff who work tirelessly to improve housing in Denbighshire and to enhance the quality of life for residents.  We have made great strides to enhance the service and make it one of the best performing services in Wales”.
